Are you passionate about maternal mental health and community care? The ECM Volunteer/Intern Program is your pathway to a paid Lead Care Manager role at Kalaya’s Destiny — while gaining real, hands-on experience in care coordination and case management.
About This Program
Kalaya’s Destiny is paid by Medi-Cal health plans (through Full Circle Health Network) only after Enhanced Care Management services are delivered, documented, billed, and reimbursed. That billing cycle takes time, so new team members — especially those still building the experience required for a paid Lead Care Manager role — begin in a volunteer/intern capacity. This role is supervised directly by a credentialed Lead Care Manager or Clinical Consultant.
Frequently Asked Questions
When will I start getting paid?
Once you meet the qualifications for a paid Lead Care Manager position, a paid position is open, and reimbursement from the relevant Health Plan has been received for the caseload you’re supporting, we will transition you to paid status. We’ll be transparent with you about timing as your hours and caseload grow.
Will my hours count toward my school’s internship or practicum requirement?
In most cases, yes — the duties align closely with case management/care coordination practicum requirements in social work, public health, and related programs. We’re happy to sign hour-verification forms and provide a supervisor letter. Please confirm the specific requirements with your school’s internship or field placement office before starting.
What are the minimum qualifications?
The paid Lead Care Manager role requires at least 3 years of relevant experience and a high school diploma/GED. If you don’t yet have 3 years of experience, you can join as a Volunteer/Intern under supervision, building qualifying experience toward the paid role. Will I need a background check?
Yes. Anyone with direct client contact or access to patient records — including volunteers and interns — must complete a criminal background check, generally within three months of starting, covering the past three years of work history in any state you’ve worked.
What about patient confidentiality and HIPAA?
You will likely see Protected Health Information (PHI) as part of care coordination. You’ll be trained on HIPAA and confidentiality requirements before working with client information, and you’ll be expected to protect client privacy at all times, both during and after your time with us.
What is the expected schedule and commitment?
Schedules are flexible and built around your availability and class schedule, but ECM members sometimes need outreach or support outside standard business hours, including some evenings or weekends. We’ll work with you to set a consistent weekly schedule that meets your school’s hour requirements.
What training will I receive?
You’ll complete an onboarding training program covering ECM program standards, documentation, care management software, and topics like trauma-informed care, motivational interviewing, and HIPAA. You’ll also attend weekly team meetings and ongoing supervision.
Is this a guaranteed path to a paid job?
No — transition to a paid role depends on your qualifications, performance, available paid positions, and Kalaya’s Destiny receiving sufficient Medi-Cal/Health Plan reimbursement to support payroll. We will be upfront with you throughout about where things stand.
